The Joy of Quiet

Yeah.

catsthattalk:

This article in the New York Times really upset me when it first came out, primarily because it seemed so right. Does anyone else feel like the internet is just a mindless source of stimulation that is ultimately unsatisfying? Does anyone else feel their attention span waning? Their memory? Does anyone else feel like the internet ultimately makes us stupider, and more importantly, sadder? Less thoughtful individuals? Tumblr, in particular, feels like the epitome of vanity—in the two worst senses of the word. Are there solutions, short of throwing your computer out the window and moving to rural Japan?

I don’t know how to change how sad I feel. The internet seems like a vicious part of a larger underlying problem—as the article quotes from Pascal: “Distraction is the only thing that consoles us for our miseries, and yet it is itself the greatest of our miseries.”

Fucking hell, man.
